A fun afternoon of
discovering the world of travel. Learn about Hostelling, tour two
international hostels, explore Portland from a traveler’s point of view,
and use public transportation. Girls start at one Portland hostel and
have an afternoon full of activities traveling across the city to the
other hostel by bus, MAX train, and Streetcar. The daylong adventure
right here in Portland gives them the experience they will need as they
journey off to explore cities abroad.
Girls take part in
the following activities:

Introduction to Hostelling
Short presentation on Hostelling
Tour of both hostel

Plan a trip from one hostel to the other
(using resources on public transportation provided at the hostels)

Travel to other hostel using public
transportation (bus fare: $1.30 for Youth (7-17 years old), $1.65 for
Adults per trip; calculate for 2 trips; you need exact change)

‘Travelger hunt’ on the way to the other
hostel (i.e. stop at the visitor information center in downtown and
locate local attractions, pick up bus schedules, etc.)

Interview an international traveler
(optional)
Every girl (under
the age of 18) gets a free youth membership for Hostelling
International, which is good at over 4,000 hostels in over 60 countries.
They will also receive a free Portland Tour Map to guide them along
their route.
