At Northwest Portland Hostel, we believe travel can be both affordable and environmentally responsible. Every choice we make -from daily operations to guest experiences - is guided by a commitment to sustainability. Our goal is to reduce our footprint, support local communities, and help travelers make greener choices along the way.

Why Hostels Matter for the Environment

Research from Hostelling International USA (HI USA) has shown that hostels generally have a much smaller environmental impact per guest than hotels or vacation rentals. While we are no longer affiliated with HI, the findings reflect the values we continue to uphold here in Portland:

 Highlights from the study:

  • Guests use roughly 75% less energy than in hotels

  • Guests consume about 75% less water

  • Guests generate around 78% less waste

  • Travelers are more likely to cook meals, carpool, and recycle

By staying in a hostel, travelers are choosing a lodging option that naturally supports sustainability!
